A domino effect refers to a chain reaction or cascade of events where one event causes many subsequent events. It can be used either literally (about a series of actual events) or metaphorically (about the impact of one event on subsequent events). In writing, it’s important to think about every scene as a domino — you want your scenes to build and then cascade to a satisfying conclusion.
A single domino is an elongated rectangular tile with a line down the middle to divide it visually into two squares, each of which bears an arrangement of spots or “pips.” Each domino has a value that corresponds to its rank, or weight; for example, a double-six domino may have six pips on both halves of the face or none at all.
Dominoes are traditionally made of bone, silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother of pearl), ivory or dark wood such as ebony with contrasting black or white pips. There are also sets of dominoes made from a wide variety of other materials: stone (e.g., marble or granite); other types of wood (e.g., spruce, redwood, oak or cedar); other types of metal (e.g., brass or pewter); ceramic clay; or a combination of these materials.
Each player in turn lays a domino, touching one of its exposed ends to the end of another domino. If the pips on the exposed ends total any multiple of five, the player earns points for the resulting row or set. A player wins a game when he or she has a full hand of playable dominoes.
There are hundreds of different games that can be played with dominoes, but the most common is simply to play each domino in sequence. Each piece must be placed on top of an existing domino in such a way that its pips match the adjacent pips. When a domino is placed, it cannot be held back for strategic reasons, but must be played when its turn comes up.
